Good morning and welcome to another edition of living better and San Diego public service presentation of the and it comes San Diego radio stations and Garry lake. The skinny jeans project is a nonprofit organization dedicated to preventing type two diabetes. They help educate those who are at risk and empower them by providing personalized nutrition counseling and support. Joining us this morning is skinny jeans project executive director Marlene Bulger and diabetes prevention program director Robert Bazell. Also on the Saturday is a lease here Nunez Giuliano program development director at San Diego American Indian health center. Welcome Marlene Barbara and at least get thank you thank you for happy scary. Great to have you on the other Saturday we're gonna talk about the ad skinny Jean project today and and also the of San Diego American Indian health so let's start with the skinny Jean project though. Now what is the skin aging project. The skinny teen project as a nonprofit. Organization that is dedicated to helping those who are at risk. Prevent type two diabetes. We've specialized specifically with people who have a condition known as pre diabetes. And we basically help and make a positive lifestyle changes needed. To prevent the onset of pecked. Now this organization just here's San Diego is just local we are locally based but we have provided assistance to people throughout the country. Okay and you mentioned pre diabetes and we'll talk about that just a little bit. How does this sat. The organization at all come about. You know as many neighbors I'm glad that comes from a very personal place and for mean. It came from losing my aunts to type two diabetes in 2001. She was kind of censure of our family and she inhabitants of upper arm but she kind of took than whole community has to be hurt her like her children. And ma'am unfortunately. As education wise. She didn't realize she had typed him. And Susan tiny tiny woman. But she. Didn't know that it could be something can affect your life and so she went undiagnosed and untreated. And impartially one date her talents gangrene. Just after Tony got infected and she went to have it amputated. And she'd died and the waiting room hospital before he could happen. Now Barbara is it is a personal thing for you to. Yes it is a personal thing for me as well I don't 2002. Similar timeframe as to Marlene us. And my mom called and at all my gosh your dad has treat diabetes. And unlike what is pre diabetes and a lot of cases. My mom and media other moms as well and over react to medical staff and she's always. The bearer of bad news it's kind of like okay telling me to talk to my dad to get the real scoop on. So I called my dad mama mama and around and say hey dad. What's the deal what pre diabetes what does that mean and it all got listened to here on business this thing is pre diabetes. However money father was. Even though he didn't believe that there is such a thing as yankees he took the warning seriously and started exercising everyday and changed his diet and he was able to reduce his chances of developing type two but bringing his blood glucose levels down. So for me that is a picture of what's. America looks like now but most people don't even know pre diabetes ends and that's one of the most important thing that we. When you bring is the education and the knowledge. To. Everybody. Who could possibly be affected by the disease. And a skinny Jean project tell tell us how the thinking about you know what the significance of the hat. You know on Monday when we restarting that nonprofit we're talking with our registered dietitian. And she came into tell me about a particular patient she is working. And it patient was frustrated because they were telling her to. Made some lifestyle changes and improve her diet and her health. And that she said. I saw how that skinny Jean it and just because I had just done research to find out that there wasn't factor eight gene called skinny jeans. And down so we say that everybody said genetics type two diabetes is highly based on genetics. What we found is that your genetics you can't change. But you can't change your lifestyle. And so yes people that have a genetic predisposition. It may make it more difficult but ultimately we're in charge of our lives. And we have to focus on Maliki and Q and so this Fijian project is saying. Yes we realize that. Your environments or you genetics may make it more difficult. But if you're ready to fight. We're here repeal. And that's and you mentioned the end of the lifestyle changes that that people can make. The skinny Jean project is all about education empowerment and of course the ultimate goal of preventing. Diabetes you also. Address the environmental. He environment based issues and social atmosphere is an effect person's ability to prevent. Diabetes let's let's talk about that let's talk about how you educating the public and what the public needs to know. So as you just sat famines Barbara alluded to earlier the most important thing be confused educated because. We believe that pre diabetes is all about opportunity. And if you don't know about you have it might be pre disposed and you don't have the opportunities do we need to fix with fat comes the importance of empowerment. A lot of times people have been stuck in a right they've tried diets over an organ and they failed Molina and attacked usually don't work so. We say that diet starts at first through that is diet and lifestyle starts at right so why would you accused are why did you battery life. And so with our program we believe in providing. From me and harm inside the necessary lifestyle intervention. That would help someone not just lose weight but lose it forever. And we want to find again. So part of that is social fun if you have the support systems around G to be successful. Then it makes it very difficult to succeed so one of the core principles that we bring to our programs. Specifically at the same heat American Indian hostages is creating a feeling like atmosphere that's more support it. Then preachy. So do you have classes do you view hold classes to educate people. Yes we camp and the program that we do that we and started at the sending American Indian health center. Is it twelve month program. And it starts out in the first six months we meet weekly and it's a combination of education. About the different topics to help you change your lifestyle as well as a support group and it's Allen sent a community. Where people can feel valued and it's amazing white people can accomplish if they have a system and in place to support their decisions to make changes. And ultimately the goal would be to take it possibly have now and have them share their knowledge. And have additional classes until eventually the goal would have beaten have a community. How the lifestyle healthy lifestyle and in the warm. Whereas right now I think the lifestyle that most Americans have is less healthy than it could be the end but that's the norm and so people sometimes don't even know. What is healthy and what does not because there's so much information out there it's hard to tell what's real and what's misleading. So for example. Part of it is understanding the social cues. What are the things that you have a your household that makes you wanna eat a certain way or do a certain thing that's what we do we also discussed. How having a basket of fruit readily available or is to seize its army could easily pick is just convenience picking up a bag checks. Maybe it's the crunch factor that you're looking for. So there's a lot of different ways we do that no one of the amazing things that's about as San Diego American Indian health centers is that they have kitchen. Now so much out of the colts were revolves around coming together as with a lot of groups. Especially minorities around food. But why is it that food is being used food isn't as close to use as as a way of showing love and affection. But in this day and age it's the food is actually poisoning us. And taking our loved ones way to force needed so epicenter they have this beautiful kitchen and we start every session. Cooking food together. Eating as a family. And then discussing the barriers that may be disrupting our ability to living out you have other classes these signs that the American Indian health center. Yes sweet deal. And we have a class at the Logan takes some health thinner. That we are overseeing and then we also. Class at the Toby wells YMCA. And helping to start as second class at. Turbulence claims TA in February OK and you mentioned genetics as as a risk. Risk factor and and his weight really the next really big thing when it comes to diabetes. I would say that weight is a factor. Lifestyle change in general on a reason why take a factor. Is because there's a large percentage of people that have pre diabetes that have eight average or below average weight. So we can't just go by the number on the field to determine someone's health. We have to take into consideration muscle if you take consideration. Bone structure. But I would say that that the lifestyle as a whole regardless of weight is a big one. Where that weight is called the apple and its forth and around your waist pack can be an end and me indicative. Purses appeared shape. But in general and honesty has to do with what you're putting in your body. Purses that the number on the scale. And pre diabetes let's talk about that. What is well I mean it can't self explanatory but that explain a little bit more about what pre diabetes is and how you can tell whether you have it. So I must say first one of the hardest parts about pre diabetes. Is that it is very difficult to know if you have it. It's asymptomatic. What pre diabetes is suspect are range in between. Happening any healthy blood sugar level. And I be so basically is Wendy blood sugar is higher than normal but not quite. At the level of diabetes. I think it's important to note pre diabetes only exist for type two diabetes which is I need in 95% of all diabetes. But it is it's really I don't describe it as. When you're wearing clothes and getting a little tight. Now it's that moment like a weight. You know Adam and going in this direction and if I don't make a some kind of adjustment may have to buy new clothes. I get a a bigger belt or something like that that's kind of how much pre diabetes is it's indicative of the direction your going. And that if you don't take action. It's kind of island which is unfortunately packed it in there's a test that was and there are five finger test. Yes on our website I'm skinny Jean project at with the GE and he is in genetics. Dot org we have the videos of I think your test that you intake it's pretty funny. It is pretty much shows you what the risk factors are and that kid I am very quickly in Los adamant it. Show you if you are indeed at risk for tech today be settled one of them is are you pan Arab woman. No body shape is on air. Activity activity level things like that to eat okay and it and if you find that you are that you do have pre diabetes what's the next step. Definitely we would recommend that you would go and untie your doctor. And have blood work done because it's important to know what your physical Pletcher of arts and you can be put it in yourself and you are them. And at the same time reach out to us at the skinny teen project we have programs. Throughout this city will be offering hand if you have blue cross. Blue shield. It is a 100% member covered benefit. No co pay. Last guys act so there's a lot of CD in south parents across the shield and it is a half percent cards though he contact us with an aging project. He gets have a wonderful improvements your health and you got. I think now and again the you do a lot of work with via the San Diego American Indian health center and we see that you are with Thea. Other health center of the about it well. Sending American Indian health center is an urban Indian health center and our mission is to promote excellence in health care. With respect to native custom and tradition. So as Marlene and Barbara ordered the speaking of earlier we placed a lot of attention to. The sense of family tradition and respecting. And that background so that we maximize. Person's experience land parents are health and because since we were just listening. A lot has to do with food with family and and so we want to make sure that we take into consideration all of those. Environmental factors that contribute to my decision making about what reckoning even when reckoning Eden. You know Howard can come together as a community. Antlers which the F center located. Its low hit on first avenue just off of laurel around block away from laurel and first like I said it's an urban health center's south. It's available to anyone. Who isn't just an incoming and receiving care we provide medical dental and behavioral health. Just recently we extended or than 2 hours till 7 o'clock and we have pediatric dental on Saturdays. You know working. Very hard to make those services available to families to working families now. We are federally qualified health sinner which means that we. Are open to the general public not just a native publics so you know it it's open to anyone that needs health care. And as it is somebody have to make have to make an important energy take Watkins. Well we've pretty fired up playing months because then that means that the providers are scheduled to be ready for you when you come in the door. I'm week you know we do see people that walk in who need help and are just all of a sudden waking up feeling partly. But definitely we invite the public to make an appointment to come in and and diabetes Saddam in others the skinny Jean project and work at the at the center. Classes and sets. And diabetes more prevalent with with the American Indian populations and yes it is. If I read it's it's what 2.3 times greater the likelihood is 2.3 times greater. Applying diabetes than nonhispanic white population right and some of that. The results of historical. Nutrition patterns. I ability to have access to nutritious food. And so. Iron native patients have struggled with that and so now that we have access to. You know different types of food you wanna make sure that we educate our patience on the best choices for them given. Whatever health status they come into the clinic Klansmen to say OK you know you need to lower your cholesterol Unita. You know keep check of your legendary needs to. I'll follow these dietary our physical exercise guidelines that your provider is as providing you and so programs like. I diabetes prevention program does a fabulous wonderful job of working women have patience and helping them reach healthy utopia. Both the response yet from. From folks that are that are taking these classes at the center. Well all answer that in two ways one in terms of what it is physical outcomes and success rates and one in terms of what makes us feel really good so. All takes its success rate now let Barbara telling you one of our shining moments and a in general the objective at a V diabetes prevention program is. To lose at least 5% of your body weight within six months and Q as we've said before we don't want to lose and find it. So let me check in when we did note that one year check out. We need to be able to see that you have at least maintain that we've lost and one more. And by the third month we already have participants that are over 8%. So we are we are over well over our goal and less than passes vault. Quarterly that a program and half are waited six month marker so they're very excited. About the overall success of everyone in our program. And I have Barbara tell you one of our favorite moment. So one of the class members. We yards and is wrapping up at the end of the session and in his late in town I love it here because I feel scene and I think a lot of people. Regardless of ethnic background. Don't necessarily feel seen by a institutions. Or the government and one thing that we've brought to the table by having this community group with kitchen. The only feel is that people. Are comfortable. And what and want to share and they're so much value that they add to that class as firm. For us because we've learned so much about each individual. And they bring a lot to each other participants and so. Once it crosses over this core group still could have each other even if we're not there every week and that's typical of having this community. Who really depend on each other and know how to how to help place. Our participants are even getting together and going for walks. On their own and link urging each other throughout the entire program so. You know land there is no man left behind. You know we all across the finish line together as wind is one huge success team we we don't accept defeat with that. And there's one other comment that island to share that I thought was pretty amazing. One of the participants said that I'm finally in the driver's seat it's my decision what I eat. I know old if I think sending in my mind and I now. It's my responsibility. And I have a choice not to do that if I make it tweaks to each sending that mean he's not so healthy. That's fine I just know later on I can eat and make sure I'm eating healthier to make up for. And so this person felt empowered. Me handing control as opposed to think a lot of people with food because they can't control it. I have that problem. You talk about I'm about losing weight and not finding again I lost about thirty pounds several years ago unfortunately I found yet. And how that goes yes lets it sounds like you've got to a great success rate go in there won't have you been doing these these classes. Says PG project began in 2000 and eat before week we had done the research on a national IDs from mention. The study the route about that the tide is prevention program that was done by the NIH CDC center for disease control and prevention. And we knew that lifestyle. From the data I was treatment in morph more effective in reducing diabetes medication. At that time we started off with our own intervention had a lot of success with it. But recently. And 2014. We had a tremendous opportunity to join the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. In a program called the national diabetes prevention program. The collaboration hospital system insurance companies and little people like us with a heart and passion for prevention. To really take. This proven model and bring into our people. What good does that do to how to just sitting up there and answers when it needs to come not to listen to our states. Our cities even our communities and into our homes. And so we've been part of the Indy PP the national mine's Richard program this doesn't fourteen we were the first organization and and you economy. To join and we are also the first organization and Cheney don't count me to receive. What is called full recognition from the CDC basically say you can do which is that you can do. Is there than third in the entire state of California so we've got this amazing resource and we are so blessed to be able to work with. Organizations vaccine Diego American Indian health centers because. They get it. They understand. Not just the importance of prevention and taking care of their population and an hour Cheney and but the understand that nasty culturally relevant. You know there's a reason why isn't a need for the center. Absolutely. One of the things that is. Striking is that as a Meriden health and aren't we are open to. Every one regardless of what trial was part of the country come from. Because there's so many times and relocation dated jobs a navy what have you school. And so. We are available to to provide services to our native patients and so. You know Shia of going out to one of them restorations in the east county. We are here to serve the native population. And sometimes you know it's hard for hours someone who's so let's say a transplant to sending it to receive care and some of the other health centers. Because well they don't belong to that tried and so as an urban center of that is our charge that is a chart of time. Full circle regardless Pakistan where they originate from and to be able to serve them in a way that acknowledges and honors there with our culture and tradition. I did see another staggering statistic regarding the American Indian population an Alaskan native. And that is that a youth aged fifteen to nineteen saw 110%. Increase in type two diabetes between 1990 and 2009. Why is it such a huge jump. Among media American Indian population. I think a lot of it has to do with. The cold world some of the traditions. And an assistant and passed down. Some from food subsidies. And things that we're not in control. The American Indian population. Adopting more westernized diet which is thinking that we find with minorities from all over the world that. Are moving to the United States. Lower access to. Healthy food and and the ability to. How physical activity where they are some that we talk about the walk ability of the city there's some places that is going for a walk it's really not an option in. What about access to fruits and vegetables there are places we live in San Diego but we have things that are. There are similar to food deserts here. And it's a week we look at it could the problems happening you know in several countries and in our own city. Care threaten our backyard and we have to kind of them. Wake up a little bit. And and see what's going on and it's not out of lack of people try. 89. Million people in America happy babies. Not right. Pre diabetes. 29 million have diabetes approximately. 89 million have pre diabetes. Nine out of ten don't knowing these kids they don't know their parents. Don't know. You know that he got multiple children multiple parents are working at a house. Their doing their best they can't provide for their families. All of this it all comes together because the ability to come 2000 feet on the unit. Is harder and harder these days and just to kind of now in the meat and ultimately at the end of the day what we're trying to do is trying to create awareness that. Know what one and three young adults not talking in her grandparents one and three young adults are at risk of developing diabetes. You know San Diego so healthy but 46%. Of our population at risk or percent 46. So chances are you in or someone you laugh is that risk and what we're trying to do is aren't traditions. Of the American Indians and other cultures that make scene he'd amazing and we're trying to push a new tradition of prevention that's kind. I think this is terrific now. You have a there's a big event coming up in March. That this skinny Jean project will benefit from right yes we are so excited it is one of my favorite races hands down. It is these sand Diego. Half marathon. There's a five K component news or relay. I really enjoy doing that over the years of mine my nine year old. Weary one person runs a lake it's the ten K in another person mounted ten K. And of course a half marathon though be about 8000 runners from around the world are we coming. And the best part about it is that 100%. Of the net proceeds go to help our local charities. Skinny jeans one of them and make which is another one chance plate ardent. I am is a non aligned go to the website and check it out ST half marathon dot com and it's fabulous so come cheer. Come cry and volunteer we need lots and lots of volunteers right now takes a thousand rock volunteers to pull off this race so. And and the date is march are not right somewhere where is taking place. It starts off downtown. Around omni hotel and it has say it ends in the gas lamp. There's a huge gas plants celebration it's fabulous. It is a true celebration of are you need coming together to help our. Our local charities that we care about that frankly our city needs. We're hoping to raise enough money to sponsor some of our participants from the scene the American Indian health centers so that they can participate in the fight cases they want him. We're just that at a time so before we wrap up. Any final words any any advice for somebody listening this morning. It might think they're heading in that direction diabetes take. Action. Goody your family doctor. Get a blood test. And contacts. The skinny Jean projects. And and we can point you in the right direction that's the first step to take action.
