Here is the nomination letter that was submitted:

Señora Georgette Carillo is amazing! She works arduously on developing a non-judgmental community of learners who work together to achieve success.  Her enthusiasm, passion, and dedication to her class is greater than what I could have ever imagined (and I have seen many GREAT teachers in my time). Ms. Carillo is a superstar and has created such a positive learning environment for students, making it perfectly okay for them to be imperfect, yet easier for them to shine. She employs a growth mindset approach in her classroom, thereby illustrating that students’ most basic abilities can be developed through their dedication and hard work—brains and talent are just the starting point. Her saying is, "Practice makes better," as opposed to the common cliché of “practice makes perfect."  This take on success has done wonders for my 8 year old daughter.

In a grade level where statewide assessments place so much value on student performance via standardized test scores, Ms. Carillo places greater value on embracing each individual student’s strengths and maximizing his or her own potential.  Ms. Carillo is passionate and compassionate. She is a ray of light for the school as well as for the students and parents alike. I am so sad to see this academic year come to an end, and I wish she could be my daughter’s teacher for the rest of her elementary education.

Ms. Carillo concluded the academic year by sending the following note home to her students, “We hope you will continue to build on all you have learned in third grade.  As you continue through life, promise me you will always remember- You are braver than you believe, stronger than you seem, and smarter than you think.”  Señora Carillo is an amazing teacher and so deserving of this recognition. I truly hope you will consider her for the Teachers are Heroes Award. Thank you.
