#JenningsFire Spreads Quickly In East County

July 11, 2017

San Diego firefighters were in action quickly against a fast-moving brush fire that started near Old Highway 80 and Interstate 8 this afternoon.

What became known as the Jennings Fire spread to over 100 acres just an hour after it was reported and resulted in the closure of Interstate 8 in both directions between Lake Jennings Park Road in Lakeside and Tavern Road in Alpine.  By later in the afternoon, the fire had grown to 400 acres.

Firefighters were using the eastbound lanes of I-8 to access the northern edge of the fire.  Cal Fire San Diego announced evacuation orders for homes along Viewside Lane, which runs adjacent to Interstate 8 near the Dunbar/Harbison Canyon Rd exit and asked residents of Flinn Springs to be ready to evacuate.

By 5:00pm, Cal Fire announced that forward spread of the fire had been halted and westbound Interstate 8 had re-opened.

Below, a sample of some of the social media coverage of the fire.
