Hurricane Irma Is Already a Terror

September 6, 2017

Experts say it's one of the most powerful hurricanes to ever appear in the Atlantic.

As of late Wednesday, Hurricane Irma, now a Category 5 storm, was moving toward Puerto Rico and as the week progresses, will pass near the Turks and Caicos islands and the southeastern Bahamas, where storm surges of up to 20 feet are possible.

At this time, forecasters can't say where it might make landfall on the U.S. mainland, but cities along the Florida coast and up to the Carolinas are preparing for the worst.

Irma is part of a trio of hurricanes currently threatening in the area, which include Jose farther out in the Atlantic and Hurricane Katia which just formed near the gulf coast of Mexico.
