Wildfire Warnings Cause SDG&E to Cut Power to Thousands in East County and Rural Areas

November 12, 2018

As a cautionary measure, San Diego Gas & Electric has cut power to approximately 10,000 customers in East County and rural backcountry areas.

The move comes after the National Weather Service issued Red Flag warnings in areas due to Santa Anna Winds creating dangerous fire weather conditions.

"We've made significant investments to protect our communities, but there are times during extreme weather when we may turn off power for public safety," SDG&E stated on their website, calling the power shut-off a "last resort during extreme situations."

At the time of shutoff, winds were being tracked at 40-60 miles per hour.

Regions affected include Boulevard, Descanso, Campo, Buckman Springs, Lake Wohlford, Pine Valley, Santa Ysabel and surrounding areas.
